#TechniqueTuesday - Single Leg Takedown

Apr 27, 2021

Focus on your posture & grip fighting

  • Be mindful of your stance. You want to avoid being either too hunched over or too upright. Aim to have your head over your lead leg, a straight back, and elbows close to your body with your hands protecting your lapels.
  • The goal is to control an arm and their upper body. My preferred grip is sleeve and same-side collar.

Key steps to an effective entry

  • Before attacking the leg, use your grips to move your partner and minimize the distance to their lead leg. The simplest way to do this is to circle away as you pull them in a circle towards you.
  • Once you've closed the distance, use your sleeve grip to clear the arm for access to the leg. By pulling the sleeve up and over your head while also pulling down on the collar,  the leg becomes light and easy to pick up. It is difficult for your partner to sprawl with all of their weight on one leg.

Finishing the Single Leg

  • Start by using your knees to pinch the leg for control. You will have more effective control if you use a staggered stance to pinch their leg because it rotates their knee inward.
  • The basic mechanic is to step, circle, and drop the shoulder. My preferred finish will use a grip on the calf and the lapel grip.
